My Future Home (I wish!)

Some people thought I was sort of crazy to got to the Cape on a holiday. Well I've seen some of the best fireworks known to man in Boston, so I decided to spend my time at a "new to me destination." So, I decided to go to Nantucket. I thought it was about time after living in Boston for 11 years, I had never been to Nantucket, go figure. 

I'm a little embarrassed to admit that, but without a car, I thought it was little out of my reach. I finally find a great alternative (bus from South Stations to Hyannis, then Ferry to Nantucket). Easy and simple.

I was disappointed there wasn't a walking tour available, so I decided to do it on my own. I didn't get the historical significance, but did see the hot spots like Jethro Coffin's (Oldest House & Kitchen Garden). The house was built in 1686!

All in all I spent about 6 miles walking around the island. The sun was shining and with the quaint cottages dotting the shoreline, it was well worth the trip. I could have rented a bike, but the rocky cobblestone streets looked as though they might be challenging. Besides, it is just too easy to stop the walking and have a beer at the numerous bars and cafe's along Main and Pleasant Street.

The shops and galleries are a little too pricey for me, but who doesn't like a shopping look-see trip now and then.

Hyannis Port

Hyannis is a great place to stay while you tour the islands. What I finally realized is there is a bus from South Station in Boston to Hyannis Port (only $5 each way!). From there I could take a one hour ferry Nantucket. I chose to stay in Hyannis Port because it is much less expensive and also has a Main Street full of restaurants, Harbor, art galleries and history (the JFK museum is a must see)! In a few hours you can tour downtown and the Harbor, but if you have more time, rent a bike and ride around. 

This marks JKF's 100th birthday year and his museum in the center of town on Main Street is a pictorial history of the U.S. in the 60's and of course, his family and presidency. In about 45 minutes to an hour you will see and hear about why JFK was one of the best U.S. presidents. So glad I saw this museum.

Right off the museum is a park and art studios. Take the Kennedy Legacy Trail to find out more about the history of the Kennedy clan and their affinity with Hyannis. There are several eateries on Main Street and motel's/hotel's that are pretty reasonable.

If you are interested in seafood, try the restaurants that are at the harbor, only a short walk from Main Street. The ferry's to the island's (Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard) are steps away on Ocean Street. We are so fortunate to live in a wonderful place with many opportunities to visit beauty and historical sites.
